Reflections by the The Gate Commander
Delighted as I am to check out the view from the top of the world, I won't bother
to unpack my luggage. As my pal Rage said, this is an awesome assemblage of super-
warriors and it's an honor merely to be included in the upper ranks. I wonder if some
level of equality has arisen in the top levels, where, on a given day, each of us can
prevail against the others. Where, despite Scrag's rhetoric, even the best can't win
consistently against top opponents and the chance factor plays an ever-increasing
role. I imagine the number of challenges may set a record, but I'd like to thank
Furious for the challenge and would like to return the favor. Vengeance gets second
nod.
-- Executioner
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Greetings, Gateway warriors. It is I, Oscar, here to report on this month's
fights in the Kaikwok Gateway.
I know the title fight is what you're all waiting to hear about, so I'll tell you
about it first. Assuming, of course, that you weren't there, which most of you were.
This report is for those of you who didn't get to see it first hand.
True to his word, Executioner challenged Furious Impaler. It was only fair to
give Furious another shot at the "throne." Furious was up for the challenge, so the
match was on.
It was an exciting fight, they type of fight I've come to expect from you guys.
The two warriors circled, clashed, and circled again. Executioner got in the first
blow, getting Furious in the jaw. The warriors traded attacks for a minute, Furious
hitting only air and Executioner poking holes in Furious Impaler's armor. A blow to
his abdomen made Furious wince, but he fought on.
Early in the second minute, Furious very nicely dodged a blow and then
counterattacked, for the first time meeting flesh with his scimitar and taking a chunk
out of Executioner's thigh. It was a mighty blow! But Executioner bravely fought on
and counterattacked. Furious dodged once more and attacked, this time hitting
Executioner in the hamstring with a powerful jab. With that, it was all over, and
Executioner bowed his head in defeat. Furious Impaler is again Champion of the Gate!

This month, Venegeance opted out of the patrol, and Donatello and Teetotaler went
alone. Not long after sundown the second day, the two were surprised by a strange
creature called a Kilorri and a Water Lizard, who jumped out of a tree and set upon
them. The two warriors fell upon their foes with fury. Unfortunately for Donatello,
the Kilorri was a powerful creature, and Donatello received fatal wounds and then
escaped. Teetotaler dispatched the Water Lizard but not in time to save his friend.
Tee immediately returned to the keep with the two corpses.

In other matches this round, Saturn of Nightlights bested Seeker Pale Silk,
rising 27 ranks with his victory. Tarad downchallenged Mr. Lose, down 29 ranks, but
was defeated. Ha! (I always root for the underdog, don't you?) Psycho Scientist was
matched with Don Juan of Hack and Slash, Don Juan skillfully defeating the better
ranked warrior and emerging into the top 11. Superior, Don Juan, superior!
The warriors of Roman Heroes were the most avoided this round. Ever hear of
deodorant, guys? Briteron By did the most avoiding. Lab Support was the most
challenged warrior, matching with Darius and losing. Not surprising, as Darius has
over double the amount of fight experience.
Killer Aborigine continues to post the highest team record, an amazing 86.2%, up
0.2% with Furious Impaler's win this cycle. Angels of Pain and Neon's teams follow,
with 82.4% and 74.7%. Very nice! Jubs et al continue to hold down the bottom of the
rankings, with 21.5%--not too good at first glance, but for the young upstarts they
are, they're not doing so badly to win a fifth of their fights here.
That's all I have this round. Best of luck in the tournament to all of you.
-- Oscar

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Doc Steele -- Vengeance might be laughing at my vain bragging. After all, despite the
closeness of our fights, he has yet to lose even one to me. Furious is another story.
He has felt defeat at the end of my blade quite recently, and the taste is still
bitter. He cowers in the corner while I tramp about looking for a suitable opponent
to fight. Even Donatello and Teetotaler use the gate as an excuse to avoid eating my
scimitar. Where, oh where, can I find a foe equal to my talents? -- Psycho Scientist
Hawk -- Attaboy! Keep 'em coming; we're not through yet. At least you are showing
some courage, a quality that some of our other gate commanders seem to lack. -- Psycho
Scientist
Goldilocks -- Assur has instructed you wisely. You are lucky that Gateway lacks the
dynamics of a normal arena. But, though you can avoid me, you cannot prevent me from
making fun of your punyness. You shame our fair keep by your mere presence here. Go
feed yourself to a gate monster. -- Sly
Guardian -- What, did you change your mind again and decide that Gateway was not worth
it? Bring 'em back! We need targets. -- Psycho and Sly
Tourney Thought: "Your greatest achievement is not to surpass yourself, but to finish
ahead of all others." -- Psycho Scientist, PhD

FACE-TO-FACE XXIII
Our summer Face-to-Face will be held on 23-25 July 1999, Friday through Sunday,
at the Minneapolis Airport Marriott Hotel in Bloomington, Minnesota (2020 E 79th St.).
Room rates are $78.00 per night, 1-4 occupancy. The rooms are blocked, so you can
call to reserve your room (tell them you're with the Reality Simulations convention).
Their phone number is 800-228-9290. Our room block will be released on 1 July, so
reserve your room now.
There is a free shuttle to and from the airport and the Mall of America (the
hotel overlooks the Mall of America) as well as free parking. There is an exercise
room with free weights, domed pool and whirlpool as well as a sports bar and
restaurant in the hotel. Look for transportation info in the tournament information
sheet.
The tournament information sheet/strategy sheet should be out sometime in late
June.
If you haven't been to a Face-to-Face before, you're overdue. If you have,
you'll be back. Don't miss this one, it'll be a blast! See you there!

The Tournament Of The Golden Scrod (T.O.G.S.) Part II
No, the Armageddon is not upon us. No fire and brimstone, no meeting your maker,
no seven planes of Hell (well, except if your name is Soultaker). It is not a cold
day in hell and there is no blue moon. It is merely that I have finally gotten around
to announcing the much anticipated TOGS II! <golf clap>
Let me get right down to business. The TOGS is a team competition for the
purpose of livening up the arena (Aradi, DM 60), getting people off maintenance and
using their challenges and avoids, exploding the personal ads and getting the spot-
lights flowing. There is also the additional testosterone benefit (sorry, Ivy) of
being able to rub the collective noses of one's fellow managers in your supremacy as
a manager. That's my favorite part anyway. As an added bonus, the each losing team
will be required to transfer $5 out of their account for a stack of shiny new roll-
ups to be divided between the winning managers. Did everyone catch that? By signing
up for the TOGS, you agree to coughing up one nice, crisp Lincoln out of your account
to the winners.
Last time we did two manager teams paired together and working as one "team" for
TOGS purposes. This year, we're going to go for three manager teams to spice it up a
little bit. Once the groupings are established, the contest will last for 15 turns
with the winners determined by who has accumulated the most points. Points will be
awarded as below:
10 points for winning on an up-challenge
8 points for winning on an even challenge or random matchup
4 points for winning on a down-challenge
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member (1/turn per manager)
-5 points per team, per turn every time one of the teams does not write at
least one personal ad
Fights against participating contest members ONLY count towards your totals and
fights against your teammates obviously don't count. Spotlights should be a minimum
of one-half column in the newsletter. To protect the interests of those actually
putting forth an effort, no cheezy-ass three line spotlights, and no statistical data
will be accepted for spotlight credit. I will be the sole arbiter of spotlight
credit. We had much whining and many attempts at "getting over" on the system last
time and my patience for these games will be short. Make sure you clearly identify
your personals and spotlights so that you get proper credit for them.
Now, about the timing.... To give everyone a time to get their act together and
to recruit managers not currently in Aradi, we'll give it a few turns to gel. By
Aradi Turn 207 (due May 13), I need a list of teams and managers intending to
participate in the TOGS. Any managers without teammates, let me know and I'll attempt
to match them up with other unaligned managers and announce the final team groupings
in the Turn 209 newsletter. This means that the contest can start for real on Turn
210 (due June 24), which SHOULD BE, not coincidentally, the turn after the freeze date
for the Summer FTF in Minneapolis. Before everyone whines and complains, realize that
next turn is Turn 204 and that leaves only six turns between now and the start of the
contest.
Please announce your teams or your wish to be grouped with others by me in the
Aradi newsletter. I can also be contacted via diplo to Death Studs VII (301) in Aradi
or, preferably, by e-mail at sentinel@cruzio.com with any questions, etc. that you may
have as I have undoubtedly forgotten something or many things.
Recruit your friends, set up your teams for the tourney and come talk some smack
in the Aradi Tournament of the Golden Scrod (T.O.G.S,) Part II. The more managers
that we can bring into Aradi to participate, the better! The winners from last TOGS
were Manager and Miles, so that ought to tell you how easy it is to win. And even if
you get beat down like a mangy dog, you'll still have a blast!
