RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Greetings, Gateway gladiators. Oscar here, reporting on this round in the
Kaikwok Gateway.
First, I'm sure you all want to hear about the Captain's fight. Well, Tawny and
and her mates didn't show up for the fights this round. Maybe Carapace had them all
off on a special training mission? Anyway, this left the Captain's chair up for
grabs. After this round's fights, our mighty Teetotaler ranked the highest and now
sits in the big chair. Well done, Teetotaler. I hope you plan to take a break from
your patrolling for a few rounds.
Teetotaler, Donatello, and Vengeance patrolled this month. After a furious
scrapple southeast of the keep, a Jaguar Warrior, a Ythrr, and Donatello all lay prone
upon the ground (killed by Vengeance, Tee, and a Jok respectively). You'll be
relieved to hear that Skek has performed his magic on Donatello and that Donatello has
fully recovered now. The Jaguar Warrior and the Ythrr were not, however, resurrected.
In the top eleven, Sly (#6) TV challenged Hawk (#9) and won easily. Psycho
Scientist (#4) TV challenged Cheshire Cat (#11), and the Cat beat him, albeit barely--
two losses in a row, Psycho, what's up? Executioner (#5) fought Rage (#20) and Rage
savagely defeated the mighty Executioner. What an upset! Vengeance (#3), Teetotaler
(#2) and Donatello (#10) patrolled this week. Tawny (#1), Ta'Ra (#7) and 3066 (#8)
sat out. There was lots of movement in the top and bottom of the top eleven this
week, with Psycho Scientist and Donatello and Executioner tumbling down and Rage and
Cheshire Cat leaping up. Nice for a change.
Let's see. A boot to the head if you can't figure out which team was the most
avoided this time. Superior Forces avoided them the most again. It's almost not
worth reporting anymore, eh?
In the almost but not quite category, Kate deserves recognition for her 64-rank
up-challenge to Ronin; even though she wasn't able to put Ronin in his place, she's
one brave little lady in my book. Grandpa Cleatus (#127) was the most challenged
warrior; he accepted the challenge from The Great Skeeve (#243) and savagely defeated
the lower-ranked warrior, although The Great Skeeve deserves praise for his brave
challenge.
Movers and shakers: Prozac (#250) bested Chili Con Carnage (#160) and rose 88
ranks with his success. Well done. Mother Bear (#27) lost to Skylas Takarin (#55).
Seeker Hidden Spark (#37) was viciously subdued by Smelly Socks Lite (#66). Zalbar
(#68) lost to Crazy Horse (#104). Nice. Sirocco (#146) lost to Miron (#180). Well
done, Miron. Prancer (#160) lost to Laniakea (#194). Metamorphosis (#210) bested
Lucifer's Hammer (#195). Allunder the Grate (#74) lost to Mandrake (#125). Ouch.
Angel (#84) was barely bested by nicodemus (#131). Darius (#91) lost to Oedi (#132).
Forgemaster (#126) was devastated by Park Place (#172). Silverflash (#187) slimly
lost to Sir Dar (#211). Aurora Borealis (#152) was pummelled by Crystalsong (#233).
Nicely fought, Crystalsong. Government Flu (#222) challenged down to Excarbay (#238)
and lost. Hmph. Dream Date Log (#209) was demolished by Oxygen Thief (#240). The
Pledge (#156) challenged down to Gnarly Gnat (#242) and was handily defeated! Hmph
again. Full Kettle Helm (#219) challenged down to Let's Be Friends (#249) and was
pummelled for his efforts. Moriarty (#251) of Men in Tights savagely defeated
Scorpion (#192). Prowl (#174) was thumped by Thumper (#254).
We had two deaths this round: As I already mentioned, Donny died at the hands of
a Jok, and The Couatl (#48) killed Juanita (#53) in a nasty down-TV-challenge. What's
up with that?
Scrag is still listed as top-ranked manager. He must've had an active warrior
transfer in at the split. The Dark One is the top-ranked active manager with an
incredible 82.6% record; Neon follows with an amazing 72.2%, Doc Steele is right on
his heels with 70.4%, and then I see that Sentinel has passed Caesar with 66.7% to
Caesar's 65.9%.

Neon and Doc Steele -- Rest assured that you are not the only two currently enjoying
Gateway. I have been enjoying it very much, even if I have been too busy to
participate regularly in the personal ads. Running a couple turns without my
challenges and avoids has seriously affected my warrior rankings in an adverse way,
though, and I may begin liking it a lot less if the situation doesn't correct shortly.

Neon One -- Good question and a difficult one to answer. I guess the answer is that I
would rather see Khorga Khan retired and gone than being run by another manager.
Warriors retiring is the only turnover we're likely to see. I'd rather see them
retire with their managers than be taken over by another manager. It is painful to
think that 25% of the top warriors are whores.
If Donatello is being run by RSI (as an NPC), that is another option of keeping
the "legends" around. Speaking of which, is that true? I don't mind that at all and
if so, I'm glad he doesn't run in tournaments and I'm glad he is still around. I'd
love to see Khorga Khan in this situation as well.
I don't begrudge anyone for taking over another's warriors. Even a TC prize won
by a whore is not that big a deal. Personally, I'd think it a hollow victory, winning
with another manager's warrior. But I don't really care. I know that for me,
anything I accomplish will be my own accomplishment and I don't worry as much about
what others are doing. It's really too late not to do anything and whining and crying
won't solve anything. -- Assurnasirbanipal
Neon One -- Your system seems pretty solid to me. Obviously it isn't perfect, since
an early round victory over a TV/TC isn't recorded. It will definitely give the TCs a
HUGE # of points, which is fine. The further you go and more consistent you are, the

Ahhh, fighting my own warriors here... a breath of fresh air (for me) -- Dr. Surfer
Hey, I just realized that I had a monopoly on the free fights in Gateway last turn.
As far as I know, there's only four freebies here in the Gate: the reigning TC, the
previous TC, the Captain of the Gate, and the Popularity leader. Well, Psycho
Scientist locked up the first three, and Sly had popularity for the turn. It only
netted me two freebies, but has that ever happened before? First off, the back-to-
back TC is rare, though I'm sure Vengeance did it at some point. Second, having the
TC on the throne is even more rare since Vengeance fights the gate and the other
previous TC's have limited arena activity. And fourth, and probably hardest, is
passing that damned Thanatos in popularity. Sly did it, but only held on for a single
turn. Anyway, I just thought it was unusual, so I thought I'd mention it. -- Neon

determined by endurance. That's the only one I can recall since I got here to

Patience -- Most imitations of Doc Steele are lame. I, however, do a killer
imitation, especially after I've had a couple drinks and start wrestling everyone to
the floor putting them in arm-bars. It's pretty entertaining until the real Steele
steps in and shows me why I never even made orange belt. Actually, as far as DM
tactics, he and I follow the same guidelines, but he's much more vocal about it. --

generally not something to do around here, but when I get off the sands, Doc is all
smiles. I guess it is that whole ranking thing. I know I like being the 100s a lot

Talon -- I guess we will have to agree to disagree. I would like to comment on a
couple portions of your ad so that you may understand where I am coming from a bit
more.
First of all, you commented that Hellion is not very good, meaning that it is no
big deal he is being run as a whore. I believe there is enough mystery to the top of
the game that you are not quite an authority to make a statement like that. I don't
know that anyone really is an authority on how good a warrior will be when maxed out
at about 500 fights experience. For example, I could argue that a +4 attack (future
Blademaster) AB that "just wins a lot" is exactly the kind of warrior that I believe
will do well at the top of the game. The AB in particular has some nice assets like
lack of endurance burn and hit location accuracy. The point is that none of us really
know which of our warriors will be the best. From what I know of Hellion, he
qualifies as a possible TV (meaning one of the best 20 warriors in the game) and that
means that yet another whore may one day fill a TV spot that a natural warrior can not
achieve.
Next you mentioned you have not altered his career path. You said "had Destitute
Noble continued to run him the Hellion would be right where he is now." You can not
be sure what Destitute Noble would have done. If he liked Hellion so much, why give
him away? It seems more than likely Hellion would have slipped quietly into
retirement when he got Inducted, but instead you run him as a whore. I believe you
most certainly have altered Hellion's career path.
As for Piggin Jedi and AAAAAAAAAA?'s whore TCs I have commented on this here in
Gateway before. Several years ago I grew tired of allowing my peers to run whores and
take advantage while I sat on a gold mine. I made the decision that if nothing could
be done about whores I might as well take advantage of what I had but only up through
Induction. Xavier had given me his warriors when he quit to keep him from running
them in a moment of weakness. He told me to enjoy them however I could. Charles, aka
Xavier, is one of my best friends. So I used Xavier's forces to take over Andorak top
team and TC. But I have retired each warrior upon Induction. Why? There is a steady
progression from basic through Eligibles. A good warrior is always competitive and
the development is at a decent rate. Point being anyone who plays for a few years can
TV/TC Eligibles. Beyond that it can take a decade to TV Primus or Gateway. So the
advantage to running already developed warriors becomes obvious. The more developed
the whore when they change hands, the worse it is in my opinion. The Hellion is a
little problem compared to Gypsy Moth, Sly, or Falstaff. Four of Neon's top 10 power
ranked warriors are whores. With no outlet system from Primus or Gateway all we have
to make room for new blood at the top is retirement. And what if cumulative fight
experience adds to skills and warrior performance? We may never throw down the likes
of Gypsy Moth, Falstaff, and Sly. It could be that without a first generation badass
you may never TC Gateway. Only time will tell but clearly whores make the top end
that much worse a game.
With all that being said, I give up. I will continue to protest whores in my own
way by beating them as often as possible in Gateway and not running above Induction
myself. But when the time comes for me to hang up my spurs I may just give you all a
taste of your own medicine and sell my warriors off at auction. If I have to climb
over every moldy whore warrior to TC Gateway then if I ever pull it off I see no
reason to make it easier for the next generation that would not listen to me when I
tried to stop it. So run your whores. One day you may understand how I feel when I
lose to Falstaff and Gypsy Moth to find myself falling short of that elusive TV again.

Neon Necromancer -- You are incorrect in stating that there were only four warriors
who have TV'd in the past three tournaments. Teetotaler has TV'd in the past six
consecutive Gateway tourneys having gone 13-3, 14-3, 11-3, 8-3, 12-3, and 9-3
respectively. His overall tourney record under my watch has been 308-88-2 with TV's
in tourneys ago when he went 6-3-0. -- Caesar
All -- While I do not wish to become embroiled in this truly meaningless discussion
regarding adopted warriors, now so eloquently called "whores" (boy has RSI really
eased up on the censorship policy...), I do want to state for the record that I did
not pay a penny for Teetotaler and would not pay money for ANY warrior. I am,
however, amazed that Neon, who at one point was screaming about adopted warriors and
demanding that RSI cease this policy, is now the owner of a large purchased crew of
the very warriors he wanted to see permanently retired. Furthermore, having run Tee
since 1992, longer than Phido or Mirage did, I now consider him my own. I have even
considered giving him away, but I enjoy the Gate matches that Neon and others
criticize so frequently and I wouldn't want to see him "decommissioned." I really
miss seeing the old timers of the game like my all time favorite, Epitaph. Imagine
how wicked she would be in this environment? It's a shame to see her and others gone.
After all of the previous discussions about retiring old warriors and such, I consider
Tee semi-retired and no threat to the overall good of the game of anyone's chances of
succeeding here in Gateway.
Teetotaler and other "Old Guard" warriors are more vulnerable to losses here than
they were in Primus. I see newer, higher caliber warriors moving up through the ranks
and old timers rejuvenated form their new learns. Warriors who I believe would never
have beaten Tee in Primus. It keeps the game healthy. I have to say that I enjoy
Gateway more than any other arena. Plus the new learns are making it interesting.
What I would like to see is the Gate Commander's ranking expanded from ten to twenty
warriors. This would allow more challengers to compete for the Captain's spot and
still leave room for the small minority who faithfully patrol the Gate each turn.
Look at the top twenty. You will have to agree that all are worthy of challenging for
the title, so why not expand the parameters? Also, I am still in favor of scrapping
the present raking system for a recognition point system with no ceiling. It would be
cool to see the top warriors who win for long streaks accumulate massive quantities of
