WARRIOR SPOTLIGHT
THE GUARDIAN'S FORUM
Reflections by the The Gate Commander
Gateway managers, it is I, Gergin Frothingslosh, recently known as Rhialto, and for
this turn at least I command your respect and attention. Stormbringer's effort under
my tutelage has earned us the highest seat in all the realms of Alastari and from this
place we greet you. May your aspirations carry you one day to this lofty height where
you can take your place among the best of the best.
First let me describe the winning duel to you. Under the strength of a previous
victory against Stormbringer, Crazy-Horse chose to surprise everyone with a last
minute change in his challenge roster and give the old man a rematch. (I can only
speculate if this was the cause of the heated words between Ivy and Doc Steele at the
beginning of the face-to-face.) As the titans faced each other someone hit the
lightning switch to give the fans a bit of drama to start to the duel and this time
Stormy struck first. It was Crazy-Horse who hit first however, riposting Storm's
first attack and landing with his reply to give one of those big damage scimitar
crits. With an involuntary wince Stormy kept going trading blows with his adversary
until the middle of the first minute when he finally found the opening he'd been
seeking. He landed his attack and brought Crazy to the ground and proceeded to pin
him there. Crazy took the punishment all the way into the second minute but never got
back up. And that, my fellow managers, is all she wrote.
I'd like to thank Doc Steele for giving me the shot and I'd like to thank him even
more for being kind enough to loose so I can hold forth to you all here and now. As a
special treat I'd like to share a little real world episode with him: yesterday my
friend was the substitute instructor for the Aikido class I set up at my college,
California Lutheran University. We've both been studying the art for a long time and
towards the end of class, after we had done our job of instructing beginners, we
proceeded to demonstrate a few techniques which my buddy described as a "Thunder and
Lightning" show. This is important to do every now and then in a martial arts class
because it gives the students something to look forward to as well as lend some
credibility to the class itself. It involved full power attacks on my part answered
by the perfectly timed throws of my 6'2" partner, Casey, who tossed me around like I
was on wires. Needless to say Casey has only the vaguest idea of this strange game I
play called Duelmasters and certainly has no inkling of a DM team called Thundr +
Litening or even what a DM team might be. Still as we talked about the demonstration
after class I couldn't help but think, "Yeah, a thunder and lightning show, hey you
know that's a duelmasters team?"
Well, on that note I shall leave you. Since Stormy doesn't have a TV challenge this
weeks match should be decided by one of the TV's in the top ten, unless they fear a
decrepit employee warrior run by a manager Phido once described as the exemplar of the
periphery!
Gergin "Happy Toes" Frothingslosh
P.S. Congrats Otto X Frothingslosh! True Champion of the Apprentices Tourney!
That's right Ivy, we've all lost fights because we didn't get a new strat in on time
during a crucial match at the face-to-face, and it was bad form on your part to force
the issue on a lapse that was ultimately your responsibility. You should thank Otto
for not complaining as loudly as you and for graciously accepting another round of
fighting. It is because of him and RSI choosing customer service over fairness that
you owe your shared place on the pedestal. However, Otto beat your warrior twice in
previous match-ups, you actually saw his strat and made changes in your strat
accordingly, so if RSI wants to continue to champion customer service the least they
could do is modify the newsletter to reflect the true champion, Nite Lens, 2-1 vs.
Acropolis, runner-up.
RAMBLINGS FROM WITHIN THE KEEP
Here we are again, my dears. Here is my report on this round in our fine Gateway
arena.
Hello, Gateway! Here I am again, reporting on this round in our fine arena.
First, I want to tell you about the fight for the Captain's seat. Crazy Horse TV
challenged Stormbringer, and killed Stormbringer in the fight! Ouch, that must've
hurt! Congratulations my dear Crazy Horse, for a most spectacular win and for earning
the title "Captain of the Gate"!
Stormbringer was the most challenged warrior this time. Not surprising, since he
was Captain last time.
Qubit was the most avoided team. Eastern Horde avoided them the most. I'm not
sure if there's a rule about this, but I don't think you anyone should be allowed to
avoid teams with names that start with "Q". Do you agree? It just seems wrong.
Lord of Mercy of Off the Wall (#95) moved up the highest in the rankings, after a
battle with Alcatraz of Wasteland (#32). Other notable battles: Li'l Pepper (#93)
lost to The Offspring (#126). Jennifer Bartes (#133) was defeated by Rodger Young
(#112). Quarrel (#118) was bested by Denise (#166). 22 Jacks (#108) was bested by
Mr. Cilantro (#128). Terminus (#169) subdued Vicc (#152). Ma Bear (#41) bested Fangs
(#18). Imflatable Doll (#50) subdued Amanda (#33). The Pledge (#62) was bested by
Nibble (#101). Koji Shikeru (#48) was demolished by Yellow Ledbetter (#63). Wall
Paper Hanger (#42) was subdued by Dee Dee (#73). Cartman (#53) was defeated by Sticky
Handkerchief (#69). Tail Bandit (#86) defeated Tim Hochberg (#70). Zero (#82) was
defeated by Black Skull (#123). The Great Skeeve (#190) overpowered Sirocco (#167).
Bayloff (#174) demolished Leroy Brown (#158). Well done, all of you!
In the top eleven, Hammer of the Gods (#17) bested Mandrake (#9). Rage (#24)
demolished Toe Jam (#11). Shadow Knight (#5) defeated Rex Walters (#7). Maimed (#4)
was defeated by Summoned Monster (#28). Mother Bear (#5) was subdued by Bonnie (#23).
Cunning Fox (#3) defeated Arnie (#13). Lazar Wolf (#6) demolished Lord of Illusion
(#21). Angel (#10) subdued Complete Check (#22). Furious Impaler (#2) defeated Chili
Con Carnage (#31). We've already heard about Crazy Horse's (#4) slaughter of
Stormbringer (#1). Excellent! I am so proud of you all!
The GC finally cleaned up the team rankings and Crip finally is not showing as
#1. About time, if you ask me. Shame on them for not doing their jobs correctly!
Doc Steele holds (#1) at 68.4% (up from 68.2%). Well done, my dear Doc! Sentinel was
inactive but holds #2 at 66.9% (no changed from last time). The Mun popped into the
top with Inflatable Doll's excellent debut in Gateway, at 2-1 and 66.7%. Very well
done and welcome to Gateway! Anarchist is still at #4 and 60.9% (down from 61.4%).
Chief is still #5 and 60.5% (up from 60.4%). Well done! Excellent, all of you! The
rest of you should practice more. Remember, practice makes perfect!
Well, young people, this is the end of my report. Don't forget to take your
vitamins and brush your teeth before you go to bed.
Myrtle

PERSONAL CORRESPONDENCE
Guardian -- I don't want you to retire any warriors because of the beatings they are
taking. I just wanted to teach you a lesson about who's house this now. If you want
me to lay off of those two, just ask me nicely in the ads and I will be happy to do
it. I know that has got to hurt, so it will be plenty of payment for leaving them
alone. This turns score was 6-0 in my favor. The overall score is Doc Steele 40, and
Guardian 12. I suppose that is a bit out of hand. Why don't you just write me a
personal ad, and offer your surrender? I'll add you to the list with Neon of those
that have challenged me, and have been vanquished. Then, whenever you feel better
prepared to redeem your honor, you may challenge me again and we'll start over at 0-0.
I can't be any more fair than that. All you have to do is grovel a little bit, and
you won't have to read this tally every turn. -- Doc Steele
Carny -- Thanks. Here is to hoping that you are right about Crazy Horse bring back
the PL. -- Doc Steele
Stormbringer -- Congratulations!! I know you were excited about taking the Throne.
Well done. Now I hope you won't be ducking me, because my ego demands a re-match.
I'll see you soon. -- Crazy Horse
Mystic -- Thanks. I'm sure you are just a 5-6 TC potions from changing that "who can
beat who list." In the meantime, I enjoy having you around as you always write
amusing personal ads. -- Crazy Horse
Ivy -- In case you did not get my email, I wanted you to know that I am no longer
willing to not challenge your warriors. I have let you have at least 4 years of free
reign with no challenges, just because you asked me to leave you alone. That time is
over. If you do not wish to face my warriors on the sand, you'll have to use your
avoids like everyone else. -- Doc Steele
Sven Thorfin -- I admire your win. You just don't give up. -- Doc Butler
Juliet -- You had the edge all the way. -- Vicc
Doc Steele -- A major typo! Last message was meant for you. To repeat: "Since you
mention training, I'm curious, what is the record for most trains

NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA
The gladiator leaned forward and took hold of the front of Alarond's shirt,
lifting him and shaking him slightly. "I don't want you to tell me it's impossible,"
he growled, "I want you to tell me how to change my arena name. Who do I have to
bribe?"
Alarond assumed a look of dignified reproach (difficult when his feet were
dangling fifteen inches off the floor) and said, "We at the Gladiatorial Commission do
not take bribes-- Ack!"
The gladiator twisted the shirt around his fist a couple of times, choking
Alarond to silence. "Listen, I don't care what you want to call it. I want a name
change, and I want it now!"
"You should have thought more carefully before you chose your arena name, if you
find it so objectionable," the spy reporter said.
"As if I could've over-ruled my manager! If you had half an ounce of smarts, you
wouldn't be arguing with a guy who's already put in two years in the arena as
'Dangling Eyeball'. A name like that, I don't take any lip, see? And I want it
changed. Now."
"Dangling Eyeball?" Alarond blenched. "Ah... yes, I suppose you do want a
change, but Lady Sheila doesn't like to--"
"I want to be called the Handsome Highwayman."
"Too many letters. It can't be done."
"Okay, then, call me Jack."
"Er, Jack, I'm afraid you don't understand. Lady Greywand doesn't want to be
bothered with things like name changes. She..." Alarond's voice dropped to a
whisper, "she has to bow to a higher authority on that. Green Eyes!"
"I don't care who you gotta clear it with, I want a new name," the gladiator
snarled. "And I'm not the only one, bub. Make it happen."
"Well... it will take a little time to arrange," Alarond warned. "I'm sure we
can't do anything until after the next tourney."
"Just so it happens, bub."

Maximillian's Morya Madness Contest Categories/Prize Awards
by Hammer
Hammer withdrew the parchment from within the folds of his cloak and handed it
over to Maximillian for his much anticipated inspection.
"WOW!" exclaimed Max, "You sure went all out to make this contest a success!"
Hammer grinned at the excited Northern Badlands Manager and explained, "After
four years away from Morya Arena it only seemed right to include almost every contest
category that I have ever used in my famous Niytyole Island DM 33 Hammer Contests."
Five years as a Duelmasters Manager had left its mark on Hammer just as much as
Hammer had left his mark in the Arenas of Alastari.
Hammer may not be renowned for his various Basic Arena or Tourney records, but
his prowess as a "Promoter of Contests" was legendary amongst the ranks of those who
had crossed swords in answer to the call of competition time and again in DM 33.
Now it was time for those Managers who ply their trade in the Slow Arenas to
experience "the Glory and the Grandeur" of a Hammer Contest right there in DM 28 where
Morya Madness would rule for two plus years from Turn 228 through Turn 255.
Meanwhile, Hammer would have to consult the Gladiatorial Commission to rediscover
who was still registered in his old Flower Power stable and find out what Fighting
Style and Strategy they were using four years ago when Hammer deactivated the team.
"Sure do miss Violet," mused Hammer as he remembered his 15-2-2 reigning
Duelmistress who was slain at the 1999 Tempe F2F. The ONLY Triple 17 WT WL DF Rollup
he could remember creating on an Original New Team or Replacement Rollup.
She was a Mighty Fine Total Parry who battled her way to the DM 28 Duelmaster
Throne running on a Maintenance Strategy!
"Better make sure the Gladiatorial Commission assigns my team a new recruit,"
added Hammer as he withdrew an Elven Orb of Transport from the folds of his cloak.
"And while I'm at it I may as well take advantage of that RSI Name Change O Rama
and rename my DM 28 team Flower Hammerz."
"After all, in the Morya Madness, every Hammer is a Flower with Power!"
With that thought still hanging in the air, a purple flash of radiant light
marked the space where Hammer had been musing only moments before, as the Elven Orb of
Transport carried the Veteran Manager away to a new adventure through some such
whatever may be Time/Space/Dimensional Portal that only the Elven Orb of Transport
knew for sure.
And what of Maximillian?
He was too busy babbling about "battles yet to be" in an arena where Newbies and
Veterans would assemble themselves in answer to the clarion call of competition for
the upcoming Morya Madness to even notice that Hammer was no longer there!
*** A Helpful Hammer Hint for all those Managers with Online capabilities who
are migrating to DM 28 for Maximillian's Morya Madness beginning May 8th 2003. Max has
set up a yahoogroups for participants to communicate with each other during the
contest and to also hopefully receive the DM 28 newsletter hot off the press from Sue
[a.k.a. Ed. in the newsletters] during the course of the contest from Turns 228
through 255: MoryaMadness-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
To contact Maximillian via Email just type your message into your computer and
send to: johnl@silk.net
Hammer also plans to scribe some of his famous Team Spotlight creativity during
the Morya Madness in DM 28 and has also created a new Email address for Morya Madness
competitors to send him information for possible inclusion in Hammerz Herald which
debuts in Morya with Hammer's return to DM 28 on Turn 225 [Due date February 13th]:

First Initiate Duelmaster [FID]: Category Number 3
A favorite of Hammer Contest participants, the FID is a race to see which Warrior
ascends the Arena Duelmaster Throne from among those listed in the Initiates on the
Opening Round or Any Round thereafter.
This means that a warrior listed in the Challenger Initiates on the Opening Round
may qualify for the FID race ONLY if said warrior suffers a loss that drops his/her
recognition points into the Initiates class on any subsequent turn of play.
The First Initiate from said listing to battle their way to the Arena Duelmasters
Throne during the Hammer Contest is declared to be the FID winner. Warriors need not
declare their Fighting Style for this category as all warriors who enter the Arena and
become listed as Initiates are automatically classified as contenders. However, as
the contest continues turn by turn, it becomes more difficult for an incoming Initiate
to overtake those warriors who began fighting during the first two or three rounds of
the contest.
Style Masters: Category Number 5
Style Masters are warriors from any of the 10 Duelmasters Fighting Styles.
Each Style Master contestant is to have ZERO (0) Basic Arena Fight Experience
when entering the Arena for their FIRST Basic Arena Fight at any time on ANY TURN
during the Hammer Contest.
To qualify as a Style Master Contestant, the Manager of the warrior MUST DECLARE
the Fighting Style of each warrior competing as a Style Master by submitting a P-ad
[Personal Ad] in the newsletter where the Hammer Contest is being held, either ON or
BEFORE the turn said warrior fights his/her FIRST Basic Arena Fight any time during
the course of the Hammer Contest. [Consideration will be given to those whose P-ads
are printed the turn immediately following their First Basic Arena Fight].
Personal Ads MUST INCLUDE the Warrior Name, Team Name, Manager Name, and Fighting
Style.
The idea of this category is that every manager in the Hammer Contest Arena will
know the Fighting Style of every Style Master contestant, thus making the winner of
each Fighting Style prove they are a Champion by battling their way past their own
Style Competitors, plus overcoming the odds of unfavorable matchups vs. the Fighting
Styles most favored by the oddsmakers to beat them in a battle.
[See Matchup Charts listed in most DM Hand Books or DM Websites].
Visualize a fish going upstream to spawn while having to make its way past
natural predators, fishermen, shallow water, plus obstacles such as fallen trees and
rocks with rapids and small waterfalls and you get the picture of what a Style Master
must do to become the Champion of his/her Style Category.
Warriors registered with teams migrating from Transfer Arenas MUST ALSO have ZERO
(0) Basic Arena Fights while their team was located in the Transfer Arena.
Tourney Experienced Warriors are welcome to compete, but will be DISQUALIFIED
from the Hammer Contest if their First Basic Arena Fight lands them in the Challenger
Initiates or Higher. [If that is possible for a Sand Bagged Warrior?]
Re: Warriors declared in the P-ads for a Particular Style Master Fighting Style
Category MUST BE RANKED in the Initiates Class after their First Basic Arena Fight in
the Hammer Contest Arena to qualify as a Style Master Contestant, whether their First
Fight be a Win or a Loss.
Style Master Winners for the 10 Duelmaster Fighting Styles are determined by:
1. Being the First of their Style to Graduate from the Hammer Contest Arena
2. If No Warrior Graduates, then the First of that Style to become the Hammer Contest
Arena Duelmaster ON or BEFORE the FINAL TURN of the Hammer Contest is declared the
Style Master Champion, or
3. No Graduates or Duelmasters of that Style, then the Style Master Champion will be
determined by the Highest Ranked ACTIVE REGISTERED Warrior of that Style listed in
the Arena Newsletter on the Final Turn of the Hammer Contest.
Top Point Gainer: Category Number 17
The Top Point Gainer is determined by the accumulated points tabulated from each
Hammer Contest Arena Newsletter listing the Top Five (5) Teams on the Move each turn
during the contest.
Every time a team appears in this newsletter listing, points gained are added to
any points gained from previous appearances on this list during the contest.
Top Point Gainer is the team with the most accumulated points added together from
each appearance on the DM Arena Newsletter Top 5 Teams on the Move listing.
Marathon Award: Category Number 7
This Award is given to Each Arena Team that fights a designated minimum number of
arena fights that were determined prior to the start of the Hammer Contest.
For Example, the MMM: Morya Madness Marathon Award in DM 28 requires a minimum of
120 fights out of a possible 140 over the course of 28 turns.
[5 possible warriors fighting per turn, times 28 turns = 140 possible fights].
