SPY REPORT
The dust clung to my boots as I walked along the edge of the pit this evening. The
crowd's roar had quieted, but the smell of sweat, blood, and spilled ale lingered like
incense over the sands. From the manager's boxes to the broken weapons scattered at my
feet, here is what I saw, heard, and felt in the 1001st turn of Jhans.
At the heart of it, Barkeep Barb of the Iron Damsels still stands tall, her shield
shimmering in the sunlight after another victory. She held the title against Assail,
who fought valiantly but was unable to break Barb's guard. I caught Barb on her way
out of the arena, still breathing heavy from the bout. Another day, another
challenger, and Barb passed the test.
The sands are ever shifting in Jhans. This turn, as I prowled the fights, a few
noteworthy ones stood out to me. Spinnock was the day's storm, crushing Saint-Chamond
in less time it took for the crowd to draw a breath. Ark took Dreamsinger in a bold
challenge, and though the song was sweet, Ark's blade was sharper. However, it was
Papa Lenny from Bad Pickles who earned the loudest cheers. He broke Wildrider down in
front of the stands, leaving Neon's warrior staring up at the sky.
No one wanted to fight Emu's strain. Was it hygiene or hexes, the other managers
circled wide around them. Tanks for Nothing gave Emu's crew the widest berth.
Dreamsinger's voice must be catching many adoring fans, as he was the most challenged.
Does that designation mean strangely desired or dangerously vulnerable?
The Dark Arena claimed our only dead this day. Jenx, Runa, and DA again -- their names
already fading from the sands. Jhan's sands always hunger, and those fights by
torchlight made sure to feed them.
I left the arena sands long after the crowd had gone. The torches were lit as I
departed. The arena always speaks to those willing to listen. Through the blood on the
stones, the cheers roaring in the air, and the deafening silence of the fallen. She
speaks. Are you listening?
