This was a "simplest thing that might work" design–a square of newspaper with a short string tied to each corner. The strings were tied together and this was tied to the string you held.
It caught wind very well–too well. It quickly started to rip.
Taping it in one place transferred the stress to somewhere else so then it ripped there. Pretty soon it was a square of newspaper covered in tape with a short string tied to each corner, and at that point it stopped ripping but still didn't fly well.
It would just hang about a meter above the ground, about level or a little lower than the height where you were holding the string. Since it didn't have a top or bottom there was no direction on it so it didn't "know" which way was up.
Still, when the strings were adjusted properly it could catch the wind & orient itself well enough to fly a little.
