LAKE OF MISTS The enchanted lake wherein lies the Isle of the Eye and Sheila Greywand's Grey Tower. The Lake of the Mists is inhabited by strange monsters of all sorts, which make casual boating or swimming dangerous. (Charms to keep the monsters at bay are available at the Wizard's Academy in Talahya.) There is a small industry in exotic fish run from the Lake of Mists, which provides the Academy and Sheila herself with a small but significant source of income. Diventsa Kyan Tathanit
Frats, or Frafrejan, is the major language of the Andorian League and is spoken in all Andorian cities. Arathan is the ancient language of the Arauki, now used mainly as a priestly or scholarly tongue. Karelli dates from the Krael Empire and is still spoken in Point and Iaye by a few old families. Araoi is the old high elven language, spoken in Fratsfa and very few other places, though its modern descendent Kyan and the related Diventsa are spoken in the Ardiventi Barony. A dialect of Kyan is also spoken in Monuntial and Xochithlan, which have large elven populations. Kannish is the major language of the Delarquan Federation, though in some of the southern Delarquan cities Rathiri and the trade argot Rirot are common, and in the east Tathanit is also common. Tathanit, a "made" language which grew up along the trade routes, is the most wide-spread language in the Independent nations, though Kannish is spoken in the south and Frats in the north. Other notable languages in the Independent Nations are the Akhaddic tongue of the Karnhorn Empire, and the Ferencian still spoken in many Karnhorn cities, especially Zuwayza. Many of the non-human races of Alastari (dwarves, orcs, elithan, karragit, Shewish Giants, etc.) have their own languages, but their populations are so small as to have little effect on language distribution outside their own settlements. LENSARJ, THANE Lensarj is a member of Tarrgir's Council of Five and a high-placed member of the Andorian Assassins' Guild, head of the Convincian branch of the King's Eyes. He is a hearty country squire type, but shrewder than people realize. He's honest and loyal but during the year 509 he has been very disgusted with some of King Mickeal's activities and statements and may not have been quite so attentive to his duties as he should have been; currently, he reports to the High Thane of Convincia before to the King. About 35, married, with several children. LIRIN KIV The Empire of Lirith Kai's regional arena on the Isle of the Eye. Any warriors invited to the Isle who come from the Empire are eligible to fight here, unless inducted to Primus. The arena is located in a town of the same name, on the island shore halfway between Talahya and Willow Beach. LIRITH KAI Also known as the Swordsman Empire. This huge, ancient kingdom is located to the southwest of Alastari. It is known for the excellence of its warriors and the elaborate code of honor and duty those warriors are bound to. Until recently, little direct news of Lirith Kai reached Alastari, and there are still many misconceptions abroad. For more information on the Empire of Lirith Kai, see the Handbook of Lirith Kai, available from Customer Service. LITTLE ARDIVENTI RIVER The main tributary of the Great Ardiventi River. LYTARRI A rather rare, very high denomination coin of the Delarquan Federation. Made of gold (or gold alloy), circular and stamped with the profile of some obscure Osksian, worth fifty to one hundred astrum depending on the amount of gold in the coin. Mostly exchanged only by very wealthy merchants and banks.
