Lady Herina: a ship of the Crystal Sea Packet Group which sails from the Crystal Harbor Inn.

Lalhartha River: a river which flows along the border between Sahala and Hadarana provinces, from the Han Torra Khang to the Lendo River. It has two major forks; the North Lalhartha is 350 miles long, the South Lalhartha is 250 miles long, and after they join they go another 100 miles together.

Lament for Spring: a beer made in southern Lirith Kai from the pods of the ming bush. See ming bush for a description of the plant.

Laroju: a Lubanese tribe of Samanhai District, Dansho-Riba Province; known as slavers.

Last Day: the last day of the year, the winter solstice. It is not a part of any month, and it is usually observed as a holiday in the Empire.

Lehan-So: the fifth month of the year, commonly called Lehnso. It is named after the fourth dynasty, which was formed by the House of Lehan Sun Yar. It is equivalent to May.

Lehnso: common name for the fifth month of the year. See Lehan-So.

Lendo River: a major river on the western border of the Empire; for most of its length, it is held (by the Empire) to BE the western border--although the question is debated on the battlefield from time to time. It is about 1500 miles long and carries a tremendous volume of water (and silt--it is often called the Muddy River locally). The jungles characteristic of the Naowei extend up the valley of the Lendo farther than they do on the plains to either side. It is a major tributary of the Jambiri River.

Leopard Society: a regional warrior society, or possibly a tribal warrior society, found in the Naowei. In Lirith Kai, the heart of the society is in Dansho-Riba Province.

Lesaka: one of the Ten Baronies that united to form the Kingdom of Danath, in the days before the creation of the Empire. It occupied more or less what is now the Eastlands District of Danath.

Leshana: a weaver-goddess, probably once a member of the Drahnore Pantheon.

Lightning Hounds: a breed made popular by Lord Leeko ten Darinzur, who is the most prominent breeder and trainer of them. They are tall, rangy dogs with smooth short coats of white and pendant red ears. Their voices tend to be rough or harsh, but they are fast and without fear and so are valued in the Great Hunt.

Light of Neskira: the official title of the High Priestess of Neskira.

Liho: province in the northeast, on the Great West Road.

Lilaeorn: a bitter fruit claimed by some to promote longevity. It is quite rare, favoring northern latitudes and high altitudes; it is usually found as a straggly bush growing near or even above the timberline in the Han Torra Khang and other ranges. Rumor has it that certain Mantorian monks have succeeded in cultivating it.

Lilmisa: a river goddess or perhaps an aspect of Neskira of Drahnore; she is primarily a fertility goddess. Lilmisa is worshipped in Danath.

Lilolu: a goddess of springs and streams worshipped in Pelang.

Lina-Mai: a smooth, opaque, pinkish or peach-colored stone found on the northern edge of the Twisted Lands; most lina-mai comes from Fan Zirlyn Province. It has a character similar to fine jasper, can be carved in fine detail, and takes a glassy polish; it is a hard stone and does not show much wear from handling. It is used for small ornaments and pieces with especially fine color are sometimes used in jewelry.

Linon Hills: a range of low hills in the southwestern part of Tirian Province. As with all the land south of the Whitewater in West Tirian, the forest is much less dense than to the north; on the Linon Hills it thins out even further so that they are brushy rather than forested, and often the hills have bald tops.

Lion Guard: a regiment of the Border Legion in Hadarana Province.

Liran: the lowest rank of Adantri nobility. The liran or knight is a non-hereditary title and does not normally come with a title estate. The holder of this rank is called "sir" whether male or female.

Lirichen: a stringed instrument rather like a lute, favored by pink flower girls. It has three strings and is usually tuned to a minor key.

Lirkan-Dari: a lore-singer or scholar/bard. The term is mostly used to indicate the masters of the Silver Fan Society, but is not strictly limited to them. It could be applied with justice to anyone who happened to learn all the legends and historical sagas of the Empire and to be able to either recite them or construct new ones of reasonably good quality on demand.

L'Kusolo: a Lubanese tribe of Kusola District, Dansho-Riba Province; they are herdsmen.

Loa Horosh: a river flowing out of the Twisted Lands past Ini Palel to enter the An-Kiu opposite Kai Virang. It is a strong, turbid stream some 450 miles in length; its water is neither palatable or wholesome, but it is sometimes the ONLY water to be had... Its bed is, naturally enough, filled with shifting quicksand.

Lojarno: a small kingdom beyond the western border of the Empire of Lirith Kai, in the South Plains. Its capital is at Jarno on the Jenarle River. It has a strong ruling family and a warrior tradition; at times it has contested parts of the western border of the Empire in Sahala and Hadarana provinces.

Long Arm Society: a well-known teva society.

Lord Governor: the supreme governmental authority in any province. The Lord Governor is an imperial appointee trained for the job and promoted on the basis of merit. The training and the post is open to people from all castes, provided only they prove themselves worthy. A person who achieves the rank of Lord Governor and is not of noble birth, or whose birth rank is lower than that of the montir is automatically treated as though he is a montir born, although he does not actually possess that rank to pass on to his heirs.
