Na Hao Lu Road: the branch of the Warriors' Way which runs from Daiyla Kiv into Fan Zirlyn Province, where it is known as the Zarlang Trail. In Imperial Heart Province it is a class D road suitable for wagons, but it deteriorates when it reaches Fan Zirlyn. Nai Shang: a name applied to both the school of magic in Daiyla Kiv and to its graduates. These men, who can be identified by the fact that they shave their heads except for the scalplock, which they dye red, are mercenary battle mages. They are not well-regarded in Lirith Kai. Nai Shang Academy: a school for battle-mages in Daiyla Kiv. They are mercenaries, hiring out to anyone who has their high price. They shave their heads except for a single scalplock which they grow long, dye red, and wear in a braid as their trademark. Though respected elsewhere, the Nai Shang are regarded as pariahs in Lirith Kai for their use of a type of magic which the priests of Mantor deplore and even more for what is perceived as their lack of ethics. Na Kana Hills: a group of low hills in northern Pelang. They are mostly grassy, with scattered groves of trees and many small streams. Naowei: the jungle area on the southwestern border of Lirith Kai, in the basin between the southern Han Torra Khang and the Genarit and Kobalu Hills. It includes most of the drainage of the Jambiri River and the lower Lendo River. Naro No Hills: range of low hills in eastern Pelang; they are mostly terraced for farming. Noka tubers are grown here. Negedar: an ancient realm now in Danath Province. It was at one time called the Barony or Emirate of Negedar. Negedar was one of the Ten Baronies that united to form the Kingdom of Danath in the period just before the birth of the Empire. It was located in what is now called the Negethi Hills. Negethi Hills: a continuation to the south in Danath of the Jina Kabir Hills of Minho. Copper and turquoise are mined here. Negethi Horses: a breed raised on the Negethi Slope, the Inner Steppe District of Danath. They are probably related to the Kabila Horses, which they resemble in size and shape, but are readily distinguishable due to their unusual coloring: they are a medium tan color with black mane, tail, and legs, and black `freckles' up to an inch or two across all over the body. Negethi Slope: a sloping plain between the Negethi Hills and the Dja-Gavena Hills. It is a rolling plateau cut by deep dry watercourses, grassy but by no means lush. There are few year-round waterholes on the Slope. Nersith: a drug which causes unconsciousness for ten to thirty hours, depending on the dose, and occasionally loss of memory for events of the recent past; the victim recovers normally otherwise if kept warm. Because the drug causes deep unconsciousness and a lowering of the body temperature, it is sometimes used to fake death. Neskira: the water-god of the Drahnore Pantheon, patroness of rivers and the fertility of the land. She is also a moon goddess. Her High Priestess is called the Light of Neskira. Nightfall Society: a well-known teva society. Nilman-So: the tenth month of the year, in common speech called Nilmaso. It is named after the Nilminian Dynasty and is equivalent to our October. Nilmaso: common name for the tenth month of the year. See Nilman-So. Nilsardi: the sixth day of the Adantri week, equivalent to Saturday. It is named after Nilsaran the Builder, sixth emperor of the Harin Dynasty. Ninara: a term applied to "foreigners passing through" the Empire, travelers from elsewhere who are not proposing to set up residence in Lirith Kai. Nin Horan Fork, or Nin Horan River: the main tributary of the Nin Ho Tiran River, entering it from the northeast just upstream of Zankona. Though it flows out of the Twisted Lands, the people of Harin-Tiran Province (a dry country) do not scorn its water. Nin Ho Tiran River: river which crosses the Palenian Steppe to enter the An-Kiu River a little way north of Miroi Chang. It is about 400 miles in length and carries a moderate amount of water--for its length perhaps a little less than might be expected, but more than would be looked for coming out of the dry Steppe. Its main sources are the streams which leap from the great scarp, the World's Edge, as springs. It is fairly clear at most times, only a persistent dust storm on the Steppe dirtying its waters significantly. The Nin Ho Tiran is subject to irregular variations in volume, due to undiscovered causes. The people who live along the valley of this river make use of its waters for irrigation. Ninimi: a minor goddess of fertility or some related field worshipped in the Ninotai in Virang and Miroi provinces. She is pictured crowned with flowers and riding a milk-white cow. Ninotai Plain: a small rolling grassland to the east of the An-Kiu River and west of the Han Harish Hills; the part commonly referred to as the Ninotai Plain lies between the Ti Tai River and the Nin Ho Tiran, but there is no obvious difference between it and the neighboring lands other than the dividing rivers. Ninotiran Road: a class D/E road which runs from Sinar Shia in Harin-Tiran west along the course of the Nin Ho Tiran River to the An-Kiu. From Harinza, at about the midpoint on the road, on to the west, it is a poor wagon road; the eastern part is simply a track across the plains marked by cairns, and actually the better part of the road. Nirikisa: the official term for "resident foreigners" within the Empire. This applies to people who take up residence, but have no intention of becoming citizens. Niriksa: a term indicating "miscellaneous" or "unclassified" foreigners within the Empire. Ni-Shro: the blanket term for members of minority groups residing in the Empire which refuse to accept Adantri ways and which the Empire refuses to recognize as kemisari; "unassimilated peoples." The refusal of official kemisari status is fairly rare, usually having to do with some integral feature of the culture in question which the Adantri will not tolerate, such as human sacrifice. A ni-shro may apply to become naturalized, but s/he will be watched closely for years as a potential troublemaker even after the naturalization is granted; any indication that the former ni-shro has not forsaken the unacceptable behavior will result in arrest for treason. Nitai Cattle: a breed of red cattle raised in the Ninotai region of Miroi and Virang provinces; they are a dual-purpose breed, producing both milk and meat. Nitana: an emirate along the Ratani Scarp at the head of the Ahdal Zoar. Noble Caste: the hereditary soldiers of Lirith Kai. The ranks of nobility are: liran, tiral, comar, donal, montir, senar, and renvor. Noka: a plant bearing an edible tuber somewhat resembling the sweet potato. It is grown in temperate regions. Noramah Blades or Noramah Steel: the product of the smiths of the Emirate of Nouramah in northeastern Ratan, highly valued both for their artistry and their superb steel. Northern Rangers: infantry archers in the Border Legion of Dal Shang Province, the Trier Coast Regiment; they operate out of Fort Tar-Lang; mentioned in the Handbook under Dal Shang. North Loop of the Fatebringer: the northward (middle) bend of the Fatebringer River, the others being called the first south or Fire Loop and the second south or Stormwater Loop. Nouramah: an emirate in northeastern Ratan, currently subject to the Emirate of Alunzar. Novice: a student who has taken the preliminary vows and begun the specialized study necessary to become a priest.
