Comar

The second hereditary rank is the comar, who may be addressed as "lord" (some female comars choose to be called "lady," but they are entitled to be "lords" if they prefer). Prominent members of the comar's family such as the heads of secondary branches of the lineage may hold the rank of tiral; such a one would be called a co- or com-tiral, or sub-comar tiral, and it would not necessarily be considered that s/he held a separate title but rather a subsidiary of the family's primary title. In this and all similar cases at higher ranks, the title of tiral or whatever is not necessarily hereditary, and unless it IS hereditary, it does not come with title lands. A comar generally has a larger title estate than a tiral, usually between 150 and 200 acres, although there are some cases that go beyond either end of that range. There have been cases where a commoner or foreign-born citizen (especially if the foreigner possessed a fairly high rank in the country of his origin) was created a comar without lower-rank preliminaries, but they are rare. The title may be granted by any of several people: the Emperor, the Inspectors General, Lords Governor of provinces, Commanders of the Sun Legion, and priests of Mantor of the Seventh Illumination or higher are authorized to do this, but the ennoblement must be justified before the Council of High Lords. All nobles of the rank of comar and above are normally addressed as "lord" or if appropriate and desired, "lady."

In addition to the behavior specified for the liran and tiral, a comar is expected to take thought for the day-to-day welfare of those around her/him; the comar is, in effect, a minor and unofficial member of a concerned government. A comar is expected to be generous--to loan a commoner the money needed to repair a roof, for instance, at no interest or a very moderate one--but not a fool; Lirith Kai is not a welfare state. A comar is EXPECTED to learn at least the rudiments of a polished court manner, as s/he is entitled to sit in the Council of All Lords. It is not unusual for the Justice of the Peace in a given locality to be a comar with his title estate in that area.

A comar has the privilege of raising fifty men as a standing provincial defense force; he is expected, naturally, to equip and pay them, as well. (See under Army for further information.) S/he is usually ranked as a captain in such a case and may have several tirals and their troops under her/him, effectively commanding as many as two hundred men. In a military situation, the proper form of address is "Captain Lord Soandso"; in a social situation, it is "Lord Soandso" or sometimes "Lord and Captain Soandso." A comar who has raised troops may delegate the command of them to one of his kinsmen, a co-tiral, who would then be "Captain Sir Thusandso."
