Organized Crime in Lirith Kai

Contrary to earlier misconception, the criminal world of Lirith Kai is NOT synonymous with the warrior society Clawmoon. Though criminal in method, the Clawmoon is primarily a religious and political organization; it is also a closed group, highly suspicious of foreigners, and any arena manager or warrior NOT from Lirith Kai is VERY UNLIKELY to be able to join the Clawmoon. Please do not look on the Clawmoon as a sort of Mafia; it isn't.

The part of the criminal life in Lirith Kai which is organized is, officially, the Beggars' Guild and (in Ini Palel) the Thieves' Guild. No one, outside Ini Palel, wants to admit being a thief--it is not considered admirable in any way in Lirith Kai. The Beggars' Guild includes thieves and assassins, but they don't advertise their specialties. Theft and murder are illegal in Lirith Kai, and the penalties are severe. Any thief or assassin who is so foolish as to make his profession generally known is likely to be arrested. Contact with such a specialist, if desired, is achieved in the usual manner: go to the lowest dives and leave messages with the bartenders. Eventually, you'll speak to one who is willing and able to pass along a message. A manager or warrior who had criminal connections in Alastari might very possibly know the name of one or more bars in which to leave such messages, and possibly the name of one or more contacts, especially in Dal Shang, where all things Alastarian enter the Empire. A member of the Beggars' Guild in one city may be able to tell you where to go or who to contact in some other city in the Empire. Important people in the Beggars' Guild, especially in Dal Shang--the "elders," so to speak--and big-time fences may recognize the names of Alastarian criminals and may be aware of events in the Alastarian criminal world.

Fences are best found by going through the Beggars' Guild, as suggested above. There are many more honest pawnbrokers and second-hand dealers in any city (except, of course, Ini Palel) than there are fences, and the honest ones will not hesitate to either attack a suspected thief (all Adantri study the martial arts...) and/or call the City Guard.
