JADE MOUNTAINThe Gladiatorial Commission weighed the various claims put before it, judged it best to move the arena numbered 75 from Terna Lyrl/Lyrna Tyrl to the town of Jade Mountain. The people of Jade Mountain, who proudly call themselves the Mountaineers, have welcomed the managers and gladiators of the arena. Though a small town in this time, Jade Mountain has an illustrious history. On the cliffs which surround this narrow valley are the ruins of the monasteries which once made the region a famous spiritual center. The legendary House of Wind, of which the infamous Clawmoon is an offshoot, had a monastery here, until the clan was destroyed six hundred years ago by a joint action of the Spirit Hound and Unicorn clans. At that time, the House burst into flames from which no member of the clan emerged, and the valley came to be regarded as cursed--all the monasteries left. Overlooking the current townsite are the grim towers of the Citadel of Jade, once the stronghold of a local warlord, Sha'Hardan tel Lucan, who for sixty years defied the might of the Emperor and held the valley and the surrounding hills as an independent land on the borders of the Empire. Lirith Kai has expanded since then, but the descendants of the Line of Lucan still reside in their castle, and the ruler of Jade Mountain is always drawn from their number. The arena itself is cupped in the hills above the town. It is open on the valley side, and the stands form a horseshoe around the arena floor, with a magnificent view down the gorge of the Lyrlan River below the village. The site was once a quarry, but the vein of marble dwindled, and the amphitheater was left to await a new use when the miners moved farther up into the hills--for the mining of marble and jade is still the main activity here.
