Montir

The montir ranks next after the donal; there are some two hundred montir families in the Empire of Lirith Kai at the present time. Lesser family members may hold lower ranks with the prefix mo- or mon-, for example, mon-comar. A montir will have a minimum of 500 acres of title land, and usually quite a bit more. The montir and the two ranks above him are required to study the Imperial laws for at least one year and to take at least one year of training in the army. The montirs are entitled to attend and serve on the Council of High Lords. Under exceptional circumstances (which have not occurred within living memory), a commoner MIGHT be created a montir for very great services to the Empire and a demonstrated capacity to fulfill the responsibilities of the rank, but NEVER higher than this. Only the Emperor, Lords Governor of provinces, and priests of Mantor of the Seventh Illumination or higher may so ennoble a person. If performed by anyone else, this act of ennoblement must be justified before the Emperor--and he will inquire very closely into the character and background of the montir-designate (the title is not fixed, permanent, until it has been passed on by the Emperor).

It is not unusual to find men and women with the rank of montir (or qualified to hold it, though some other member of their lineage has the active role in the title) and above serving as Lords Magistrate, Sub-Governors, and Lords Governor of the Empire, and many enter the Imperial Army (as distinct from the Provincial Armies) and serve in the Border Legion or on the High Command.

A montir may raise two hundred men in the defense of his province, if he can afford to do so; he is given the rank of colonel.
