The highest ranking nobles in Lirith Kai are the renvors; there are fifty or sixty of them, and their lesser kin use the title prefix re- or ren-. The ruling members of the Emperor's family are titled renvor (the Emperor is supposed to be too busy running the Empire to have time to run the family), although the Emperor himself is considered to be outside of and above the ranking system--he was a renvor until he ascended the throne, at which time he handed that title on to his heir apparent. The rank of renvor is unusual in the Adantri system of nobility in that several members of a given family, if they prove themselves worthy of the honor, may hold the title at the same time; in a large family, these may be the heads of the various branches of the lineage. All renvors are native-born citizens of Lirith Kai; a foreigner may never attain this rank, although his/her descendants may.

A renvor has the same military privileges and requirements as a senar.

Although these are the official, formal ranks of nobility, in practice over the centuries there has developed a bewildering complexity of intermediate ranks. This has largely arisen from the practice of bestowing sub-lineage titles. For example, the younger brother of a comar may be granted the courtesy title of co-tiral. If he and his children are in no way remarkable, this sublineage title will die with him. But if he is himself a worthy and notable person, and at least one of his children is also, the co-tiral title may begin to take on aspects of permanence. A run of mediocrity could cause it to be quietly discontinued, but a string of worthy family members may establish it as a solid title with its own title lands and military privileges; if it lasts, it will become dissociated from the originating family and stand on its own.
