The Southern Adantri are somewhat shorter than their northern kin, an inch or two for both men and women on the average, and they are more slender than the muscular northerners. Their hair is black, their skin rather swarthy, and their eyes green, hazel, and brown; lighter coloring is extremely unusual among them. The Southern Adantri have a greater tendency toward `beauty' as opposed to the `brute force' (the southern description) to be seen in the rugged features of the Northern Adantri; their faces are more oval in shape, their eyes larger, and their noses thinner and never aquiline. The Southern Adantri of both sexes are likely to make use of cosmetics and perfumes and they tend toward a more lavish use of jewelry, especially favoring colored stones set in gold.

The popular (northern) image of the Southern Adantri is that they are `smooth, readier to talk themselves out of any problem rather than to fight, hedonistic, gregarious, cosmopolitan, masters of polite insult, overly impressed by titles and ancient lineages, and cruel.' The Southern Adantri make a more subtle, but equally lavish, use of color in their clothing, but usually embroider only with silver and gold. They also make more use of patterned cloth. The Southern Adantri refer to the northerners as `brutal' and `barbaric' and, though they are willing to concede the `exceptions' to this characterization, insist that even those favored few cannot readily achieve the `sophistication which comes naturally to the South.' The Southern Adantri are only too ready to see shades of gray in moral issues and to find `mitigating circumstances' for all manner of sins and breaches; but though a lapse may be forgiven, it is seldom forgotten--as would be expected of a group so vain of its antecedents. They are masters of `the letter of the law' excuses.

Chan-Kerang, Danath, and Miroi provinces lay claim to the greatest purity of Southern Adantri blood; Aryai and Linglan are too cosmopolitan to proclaim that attitude, and Minho and Sjima provinces aren't really interested.
