Zafdan Bis Horses: a subvariety of Zarlyna Horses raised in the Badlands District of Fan Zirlyn. Zagan: a noun meaning "drunk" and implying lazy as well; it is used to describe those of the casteless who do not seek to improve their lot because it would be too much effort. It is also used, when speaking of persons of caste, to indicate that the person in question is lazy and irresponsible. Zahar: an emirate on the Ahdal Zoar in what is now Danath Province. Control of the area alternated with between the Emir of Zahar and the Baron of Zebenil. Zalirena: a goddess who is patroness of the town of Zalir'na in Danath. Zam Torra Hills: foothills of the Han Torra Khang in southeastern Simtakka Province; they are similar to the Haro Tang in character. Zarlan: the people of Fan Zirlyn Province. Zarlang Trail: a class D road that runs through Fan Zirlyn Province to Daiyla Kiv. It is not recommended for wagons but is sometimes used by intrepid freighters. It is of better quality and called the Na Hao Lu Road in Imperial Heart Province. Zarlan-Soskin Horses: a subvariety of Zarlyna horses which is larger than the norm, as tall as the Kingsblood horses of Angsing. They are bred in the Stormwater District of Fan Zirlyn. Zarlyna Horses: the breed of Fan Zirlyn Province, a horse of moderate size (about fifteen hands is the norm), with superior endurance. They are bred to rough country and are of a warm light brown or caramel color, with black manes, tails, and legs. Z'Danavar Horses: a subvariety of Zarlyna horses; they are smaller, twelve to fourteen hands, and frequently very fast over short distances. Zebenil: one of the Ten Baronies that united to form the Kingdom of Danath; at times it was known as the Emirate of Zahar. It occupied the valley of the Ahdal Zoar in what is now Danath Province. Zegan Society: a nationally known warrior society; see under warrior societies. Zey Kamar Hills: in northwestern Simtakka Province, they are formed by the action of erosion on a highland with a caprock of black lava. The hills are largely flat-topped, the crests ringed with cliffs ten to twenty feet high; below are slopes of talus, steep and loose and prone to slide if disturbed. On the average, the hill tops are four hundred to five hundred feet above the edges of the Sin Tira Plain and three hundred to four hundred feet above the Rima Plain. The tops are grassy and inaccessible, with straggling groves of waist-high juniper trees strongly flagged by winds from the northwest. An occasional larger juniper may be found at the top of the talus slopes. The valleys between the hills are narrow, crooked, and littered with boulders of all sizes that have broken from the cliffs, and choked with thorny shrubs. For a month or two after the rains, the valleys bloom with short-season grasses and extravagant wildflowers; then the Hills are frequented by shepherds who know the narrow trails and temporary water holes. Zilnin-So: the seventh month of the year, commonly called Zilnso. It is named after the House of Zilinin, root of the sixth dynasty. Zilnso: common name for the seventh month. See Zilnin-So. Zinjaran: a race found in the central Han Torra Khang, mostly in Hadarana and Sahala provinces.
