Mantor

Mantor, who is also called Mantor the Bright, is the primary god of Lirith Kai at the present time. As far as the followers of Mantor are concerned, other gods are more or less unimportant compared with Mantor Himself. Mantor started out as the god of honorable combat; since the Adantri were (and still are) a people who devote a considerable part of their energies to training in the martial arts, he was always a very important god. He is said to have aided the Adantri in a crucial battle about seven hundred years ago, and the Emperor of that period was so grateful that he made Mantor the main god of the Empire. Since that time, his sphere of influence has been extended to include good or just government, fair business practices, and well-regulated home and family life, and he has become the only really important god throughout the Empire as a whole. (There are still other gods and goddesses, but they are only locally important.)

Worship of Mantor is mostly a personal thing. There are very few "high holy days" that involve public services; mostly people go to the temple when they feel the need, pray or meditate, make an offering, consult a priest if that seems appropriate, and then leave. Offerings are usually modest--a few coins, a candle--the temples don't need the money and the teachings of Mantor stress that you can't buy his favor. Sometimes people will offer a vow of some sort of service--what we might call "community service," or a vow to undertake some quest: these vows are usually not offered conditionally ("If you do this for me, I'll do that for you"). One thing Mantor is totally against is human sacrifice.

The temples of Mantor offer the following services at reasonable fees: basic education (Lirith Kai has a high standard of literacy), self-defense training (everyone in Lirith Kai has at least some martial training), medical care (there are secular healers, too, however), counseling and advice (mostly in those areas where Mantor is considered to be powerful), and protection against inimical magics. All Adantri very strongly disapprove of magic; the practice of magic anywhere in the Empire by anyone, stranger or not, is going to get the practitioner into big trouble. (Such as stoned by a mob, no one will do business with you, and you'll end up in jail. The jails for magicians are run by the priests of Mantor, and you can't spell your way out--they are designed to hold magicians. See the section on Magic for further information.)

We haven't given much thought to the underworld/afterlife of the followers of Mantor. However, it seems that the faithful of Mantor, on dying, go on to some other life for which this one was a training period; whether this is a case of reincarnation into some other life here on Ghea or movement to some other universe or plane of existence is not clear. However, their souls are not, in the normal course of events, available for the meddling of necromancers.

The Adantri practice inhumation (burial in the ground) and cremation with about equal frequency.
