HANRA

In the Hill District of Aryai Province may be found some people who are not Adantri, the Hanra of this and the adjoining Lanres Hanar Province. The Hanra are somewhat shorter than their Adantri neighbors and slightly huskier, unusually light of skin for so southern a homeland, and most readily distinguished by their triangular faces with broad foreheads and narrow jaws. The Hanra are conspicuous for the plainness of their dress, most appearing in a sort of ankle-length shift of coarse-looking tan cloth (they weave it themselves) that is belted with a strip of copper-studded leather and has wide sleeves to within a few inches of the wrist; the robes have hoods, which about a third of the Hanra wear up at all times. Although the Hanra pay respect to Mantor whenever they come into one of the towns or villages which has a temple, they are believed to practice a religion peculiar to themselves in their own settlements. Though no Hanra has been known to join a warrior clan and they never carry swords, they will defend themselves and their property fiercely with slingstones (they are VERY good with them) and have always answered the Emperor's call for troops when the land is endangered. They are excellent shepherds and good citizens--no one has ever suggested otherwise--but they are odd.
