Hadal Hrinar: a small intermittent river in Kiniar Province which `flows' from the Hurin Hills to the An-Kiu but actually seldom flows at all. For most of the year, the Hrinar is merely a chain of oases linked by a shallow, sandy, meandering valley.

Hadal Kanar: an intermittent stream flowing from the Makar Hills to the An-Kiu River through Kiniar Province. It is some 300 miles long, with many springs in its bed. The upstream half of the river is through canyons cut into the Kanar Steppe, the lower part lies in broader and shallower valleys and carries water more reliably.

Hadarana: a province in the western part of the Empire.

Hadara River: flows through Hadarana Province from the Han Torra Khang west to join the Lendo River. It is 350 miles long, fairly deep, and carries considerable sediment over most of its length. It is subject to serious spring flooding.

Hadarat: a hill tribe of southeastern Hadarana.

Hall of Khra: the name given by dwarven traders to their home in the north, which is presumed to be under the Khriatrin Mountains.

Hand of Mintir: the official title of the High Priest of Mintir.

Han Harish: the range of rough hills in eastern Virang and western Harin'Tiran provinces which separates the An-Kiu Valley from the Palenian Steppe. They are of sandstone mostly (or at least they were) which has been much broken and tumbled about by movements of the earth and volcanic intrusions, and are overgrown with low dark trees and thorny brush.

Han Ko River: enters the Simtakka Valley from the northeast and is joined by the waters of the Semra No and Sahelo rivers near the center of the valley; it flows into the west and eventually pours into the Great Canyon far beyond the borders of the Empire. The Han Ko, which is some 300 miles long above the triple junction and extends for another 900 miles beyond it to the Canyon, is intermittent in some areas, though replenished by springs in its bed.

Han Marsh: a small area, as marshes go, but wet and reedy, in the Simtakka Valley. The marsh retains its pools of open water long after the rest of the Han Ko River has dried up in the summer sun, but it has been found generally unhealthy to drink of the marsh water, for what reason, no one knows. The marsh is much frequented by waterfowls.

Hanra: a race in the southern part of the An-Kiu Valley; see under Peoples of Lirith Kai.

Han Torra Khang: a mountain chain that runs the length of the Empire (and even goes farther in the north). It forms the western boundary of the An-Kiu Valley and is very high and rugged (comparable to the American and Canadian Rocky Mountains of North America). The peaks at the north end of the range are perennially snow-capped, and even the southernmost high peaks receive snow in season.

Harida: a sedentary plains tribe found in Hadarana and Sahala provinces; they are believed to be related to the Kojoka.

Harin Pony: a breed of small horse (twelve to fourteen hands) developed on the Palenian Steppe. They are very tough and adapted to dry fare and little water, gray and dun-brown in color, and very long on endurance.

Harinzans: the people of Harin-Tiran Province. See Handbook.

Harnso: common name for the first month of the year. See Harin-So.

Haro Tang Hills: a group of foothills of the Han Torra, in northeastern Simtakka Province. On their western edge, the Haro Tang are like the Zey-Kamar Hills (which see) in character. Farther east, closer to the towering Han Torra Mountains, the Haro Tang rise steeper and more ruggedly, with great cliffs of basalt to hinder the stranger who dares travel there. As rangers have so wisely observed, only a fool leaves the marked trails in a mountain region--because those trails may well be the only way through.

Harvest Day: the day of the autumn equinox, which falls between the ninth and tenth months of the year. In most places in the Empire, Harvest Day is a holiday, though seldom the actual day on which the harvest either begins or ends.

Harvest of Jolgera: the official title of the High Priestess of Jolgera.

H'Doran: a war god worshipped in Alhodhri, consort of the mother goddess Imhavri and father of the shepherd god Dharim.

High Command: the professional generals of the Imperial Army, as distinguished from the officers who raise and command the Provincial Regulars. Generals of the High Command may be of any caste by birth. They form a council which advises the Emperor on military matters and are the ultimate commanders (short of the Emperor himself) of all the armed forces of the Empire.

High Priest: the rank of a religious professional who has passed through the regular stages of the priesthood and through a period as a contemplative, probably having served as an abbot. A high priest is usually the senior priest at a major temple; he is called a high priest, however, as this is a higher rank than that of chief priest.

Highway Guard: the quasi-military force that defends the highways of the Empire from bandits and aids travelers.

Hill Wind Society: a well-known teva society.

Holzarik Trail: runs from Touran to Onour Amoun, a distance of about 225 miles. It is a pack trail with fair water sources and is not adapted to the use of wagons. The western extension of this trail is called the Milzar Trail.

Hornbuck: a very large deerlike animal having unbranched horns. It is considered a dangerous animal to hunt, as its behavior is unpredictable, especially during the fall and spring, and it shows no trace of fear of man--a few hunters are killed hornbuck every year. They are usually black, although red hornbucks have been seen occasionally, and their horns are pale with darkened tips, up to three feet in length and sometimes as much as three or four inches thick at the base; the horns are not shed like a deer's. The females have shorter horns For most of the year they live alone, but in the fall and spring they assemble in quarrelsome groups and are especially dangerous. Naturally, that is when they are hunted.

Horned Serpent Society: a nationally known warrior society; see under warrior societies.

Horn Followers: another name for members of the Followers of the Horn regional warrior society.

Hurin Hills: a range of low hills in southeastern Kiniar Province, between the southern end of the Kiniar Plain and the southern end of the Kanar Steppe; they are said to mark the beginning of the Tulan Steppe. The Hadal Hrinar has its source in these hills, which are fairly well forested for the area; it is said that these hills are underlain by a network of springs which unfortunately don't leave the immediate area--the hills are well watered, but they send little of that vital fluid down the bed of the Hadal Hrinar. The hills are somewhat steeper on the west than on the east, but steepest of all on their south faces.
